DEPAUL
TUTORS
The DePaul University tutoring program here at Visitation gives our
students the extra individual instruction they need to master essential
skills and concepts while providing a service learning experience for
DePaul University students.
DePaul University students take school vans, public transportation or
cars to Visitation School three times a week. They work with our students
on a consistent basis helping them with their classwork and homework
during and after school. Although the academic help is the main reason
for the tutoring, the mentor relationship is what makes this program
successful and beneficial for both Visitation and DePaul students.

VISITATION
LITERACY PROGRAMS
The Literacy Program was initiated to help meet the individual needs
of all students in literacy. The Literacy Coordinator works in the Kindergarten
through Fourth grade classrooms with the homeroom teacher. With two
teachers teaming during the literacy block schedule, we can meet individual
student needs better. Students are taught in small groups or one-on-one
rather than in a whole classroom group. We give extra support to those
who need it and challenge those who need to be challenged.
We are also working with the parents to better literacy instruction.
Parents are the first teachers of their children. Pre-school through
2nd grade students read every night with their parents. Newsletters
on literacy topics also go home throughout the year.

VISITATION
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Contrasting the images of violence, poverty, and failure that pervade
the inner-city of Chicago's south side, the innovative Visitation Scholarship
Program provides hope and opportunity by awarding scholarships to eligible
eighth grade Visitation students to attend a Catholic high school of
their choice. The Visitation Scholarship Program will guide recipients
through their high school career, provide financial assistance and a
system of support which enables them to achieve excellence.

JUNIOR
SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Junior Scholars Program is designed to recognize and encourage young
men and women of character who have achieved or are motivated to achieve
academic excellence.
The Junior Scholars Program seeks to keep students engaged and excited
about learning. This excitement and desire to learn will serve Junior
Scholars well both now and in the future.
Our purpose is to motivate Visitation students and to meet a critical
need to ensure the integrity and continuity of the Visitation Scholarship
Program. Participation in the JSP does not guarantee acceptance into
the Visitation Scholarship Program, but it does provide valuable experiences
that will help to prepare them for high school.
Junior Scholars are chosen from the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades through
teacher recommendation and administrative review. Junior Scholars must
be re-nominated each year. Members are constantly evaluated by progress
reports, report cards, and individual meetings with the Program Director.
The Junior Scholars Program consists of three main elements:
• Individual Meetings – Once a month scholars meet with
the Program Director individually to didcuss academic progress and personal
growth.
• Group Meetings – Twice a month scholars meet with the
Program Director to complete projects, engage in group discussions and
other activities based on field trips for each grade level.
• Field Trips – Each year scholars participate in educational
field trips in the Chicago area that are designed to provide interactive
experiencex related to class content.
Junior Scholars also participate in Junior Achievement workshops that
introduce them to the world of business and finance.
